Katherine Kristin "Katie" Murray, 16, of La Plata, MD, died suddenly on February 9, 2011, on Oliver Shop Road. Katie Murray was an amazing young lady. Her family was the most important part of her life. This makes her other accomplishments all the more impressive as her family was always her number one priority. When she set a goal for herself, you had to consider it done. The word failure was not in her vocabulary. Anyone who spent five minutes with Katie Murray knew they were with someone very special. If you were her friend or family member you were truely blessed. She defined the words perfect sister. She was the girl parents dreamed their sons brought home. She was what every parent hopes their child aspires to become. Her loss robbed this world of someone who was going to make a real difference. We can only dream of the things she would’ve done if she had lived. I don’t think we can accurately estimate how bad this loss is to all of us, because she had surpassed so many expectations at the young age of 16. With each birthday, her goals grew bigger and bigger and her accomplishments started to grow into a mountain. The problem in this world is there aren’t enough people with the qualities of a Katie Murray in it. Her smile alone could change a person’s day for the better. Think about it. You could take away all her other amazing qualities and her smile alone was something to behold. Katie attended Archbishop Neale School in grades K-8. She was presently a Junior at La Plata High School with a 4.1 GPA while taking Advanced Placement Classes, Historian of the National Language Honor Society, and a Spanish Tutor. She played piano for eight years with multiple awards - she placed first in the Sonatina Festival. She was employed as a Cashier at the La Plata Panera Bread Bakery-Café. She was also a Cheerleader for La Plata Blue Knights, Archbishop Neale School, and La Plata High School. She was also a Volunteer at Charles County Nursing Center. We have all been cheated by her way to early death. Born March 8, 1994, in Clinton, MD, she was the daughter of Stephen M. Murray and Christine Lyons Murray. Predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Thomas and Helen Murray; maternal great-grandparents, Ruth and Bob Young; paternal great-grandmother, Gertrude Murray. Survived by her parents; sister, Danielle "Ellie" Marie Murray of La Plata, MD; maternal grandparents, William “Bill” and Ruth Lyons of La Plata, MD; loving boyfriend, Zackary Stephens; aunts, Colleen Martin and her husband Louie, Kathy Chapman and her husband Lannie, Lorrie Dreibelbis and her husband Doug, Mary Parrot and her husband George, and Nina Meyers; uncles, Bob Murray and his significant other Chris, John Lyons and Denise Stahl (godparents), Bob Young and his wife Donna, Rick Young and his wife Margaret, Mike Murray and his wife Mary Claire, and Rich Lepson and his wife Gloria; cousins, Billy and Robbie Lyons, Farren, Braden and Delaney Martin, Steve and Dale Dreibelbis, Keri, Erin, Judd, and Damion Young, JC and Allison Parrot, Nathan Murray, and Beth and David Lepson. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, from 2-4PM and 6-8PM with wake service at 7PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Plata, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, beginning at 10AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Fr. Ron Potts will officiate. Pallbearers will be Steven and Dale Dreibelbis, Anthony Safewright, Jack Mister, Adam Mulvin, David Brown, and Jason Jennings. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Newport, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to La Plata Blue Knights (LPBK) in care of the Katie Murray Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 956, La Plata, MD 20646.
