Dorothy Thornburg

Born January 14, 1918 in Baden, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Myrtle I. and Robert E. Goldsmith. She was the sister of the late Kathryn Cavanaugh, Harvey Goldsmith, Raymond (Buster) Goldsmith, Edward Goldsmith, and Carl Goldsmith. On November 24, 1937, Dorothy married Willis Ovid Thornburg. Thye lived on their farm in Cedarville, MD. After staying on the farm for 11 years after her husband’s death, Dorothy resided with her daughter and son-in-law until her death. Dorothy was an active lifetime member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Baden. She held numerous positions in the church including President of the United Methodist Women; chaired for years the Mother & Daughter Banquet, Father & Son Banquet and church dinners. Dorothy was also an active member of the Baden VFD Ladies Auxiliary, serving as President and working with the ladies to help support the Baden VFD. Dorothy was employed at Baden Grocery until she went to work for the Bank of Brandywine, where she retired 30 years ago. She was very dedicated in whatever she undertook. She was an exceptional cook and hostess. She loved having all the family in for holidays. Christmas was her favorite. She enjoyed entertaining friends for all sorts of gatherings, to play cards, crochet, etc., and always served them meals including her famous lemon meringue pie or her homemade chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. Her hobbies were doing embroidery work and giving them to family and friends, watching her birds at her bird feeders and following the Baltimore Orioles. She would learn the players each year and would be so excited when they would win. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Rachael M. Lederer and son- in-law, William C. Lederer of Baden, MD; her son, William E. Thornburg and daughter-in-law, Charlotte L. Thornburg of Batesville, SC; six grandchildren, Janet L. Bradley of Catonsville, MD, Don. E. Lederer and his wife, Dana A. Lederer of Bradenton, FL, Laura M. Wilson and her husband, Jim Robert Wilson of Cedarville, MD, Patricia G. Woodburn and her husband, John Woodburn of Mechanicsville, MD, Pamela Jenell Corbliss and her husband Mark Corbliss of Virginia Beach, VA, and Gregory W. Thornburg and his wife, Jeppa V. Thornburg of Mechanicsville, MD; eighteen great-grandchildren, J. Colin Bradley, a US Marine serving in Iraq, Lane A. Bradley, a college junior, Brenden C. Bradley, a college freshman, Amanda A. Lederer, a college junior, Kevin W. Lederer, a high school senior, Emily Rene Lederer, a 6th grader, J. Dylan Wilson, a high school junior, Skylar R. Lederer, a pre-kindergartner, Elizabeth M. Wilson, a delightful three-month old, Sarah E. Woodburn, a college graduate and professional, J. Joseph Woodburn, a college freshman, Dakota C. Corbliss, a high school senior, W. Logan Corbliss, a high school freshman, Hunter M. Corbliss, a 6th grader, Quinn K. Corbliss, Noah D. Corbliss, & Savannah R. Corbliss (triplets), in 2nd grade, and Paige C. Thornburg, a kindergartner; two sister-in-laws, Irma Thornburg and Joy Goldsmith; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was truly blessed with a wonderful family. Visitation will be held at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Baden, MD on Sunday, April 26, 2009 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, and on Monday, April 27, 2009 from 10-11am. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Monday, April 27, 2009 at Immanuel United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A reception will be held at the Willow Room at the Baden VFD in Baden, MD immediately following the burial in “Celebration of Dorothy’s Life.” All are invited to attend. Rev. James Hunt, minister at Immanuel United Methodist Church and Rev. John Williams, retired Methodist minister and friend of the family, will officiate. Pallbearers will be Don Lederer, Greg Thornburg, John Woodburn, Robert Wilson, Brenden Bradley, and Kevin Lederer. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Cross, Wayne Cross, Robert Cooksey, Doyle Funkhouser, Joe Richards, and Robert Seger. Soloist will be Ray Borras and Organist will be Sandra Cross.
