Debra Shelor

Debra Jean Smith Shelor of Waldorf, Maryland, died on Friday, November 20, 2009 at her residence. She was 65 years old. Born on January 31, 1944, in Shelbyville, TN to the late Dorothy Louise Fly and the late Harvard Payson Smith. Debra attended college in Alabama and then moved to the Maryland area. She worked as a Sales Associate in several department stores including Peebles and Blairs, both in Waldorf and later worked at Village Drugs. She was truly an animal lover and was very active with the Humane Society of Charles County. Naturally, she had pets of her own including one dog, Bill and four cats, Vera, Jeff, Scottie, and Itty-Bitty. She had a great friend, who considered her like a sister in Wanda Pingitore. Debra was like a mother to Wanda’s two children Rachel and Tony. One of her greatest loves was that of the theater. She held a membership with the Kennedy Center for over 25 years and attended many performances. Debra also loved gardening and enjoyed a flower garden that was the envy of those who saw it. She was active with her church, The Vine Community Wesleyan Church in Waldorf. She was a very open person who had a friendly personality and was a joy to be around. She is survived by her goddaughter, Debra Nelson of Shelbyville, TN; godson, Rich Nelson of Daphne, AL; one sister; and a number of friends through her association with the Humane Society. Visitation on Saturday, November 28, 2009, from 2PM to 5PM at the Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Avenue La Plata, Maryland. Funeral Services will be held at New Life Church 9690 Shepherd’s Creek Place La Plata, Maryland on Sunday, November 29, 2009 beginning at 2PM with Pastor Anita Eastlack officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Waldorf, Maryland. Pallbearers are Tony Pingitore, Myron Chapman, Earl McJett, Earl McJett Jr., Dave Braunstien.
