August 22, 1923 - February 19, 2021
Mary “Delia” (as she always introduced herself) Butler, age 97, left us while she was peacefully sleeping the evening of Friday, February 19, 2021 at her residence in Washington, DC. Born in Charles County, Maryland on August 22, 1923, she witnessed incredible changes to her world. After graduating from Bel Alton High School in Faulkner, Maryland, she moved to Washington, DC. She married Raymond Hamilton Christian and they had four children, LaVern, Vivian, Walter “Junnie,” and Gloria. After many years they divorced. She then married DeVon Butler and they had two children together, Gwendolyn and Theodore “Teddy." Delia was a special lady. She loved children, no matter whose they were. She celebrated all holidays with such enthusiasm. Christmas, especially, was always special – a gift for everyone and of course dinner was always yummy. She also loved to go on day trips with her grandchildren. The Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia was a favorite. Almost every Sunday was a trip to her mother’s home in Charles County. She was a great housekeeper, cook, and gardener. For several years, she even worked outside the home as a switchboard operator for a bank and of course we can’t forget her salesmanship with Avon cosmetics. Most of all she loved her family and instilled in her children strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed. She was predeceased by both husbands, Raymond and DeVon; her oldest daughter, LaVern; and her oldest son, Walter; her mother, Edith Swann; and her father, Raymond Swann; and all 10 of her siblings, Blaine, Martin, Raymond, Herman, Jesse, Jennis, Daniel, John, Dora, and Pearl. She is survived by her children, Vivian, Gloria, Gwendolyn (Delbert), and Theodore (Deborah). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 10AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM at St. Ignatius Chapel Point Cemetery, 8855 Chapel Point Road, Port Tobacco, Maryland 20677. Interment to follow at Washington National Cemetery, 4101 Suitland Road, Suitland, Maryland 20746. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.
