Jeanne Elinor Read

Jeanne Elinor Read, 97, of Waldorf, Maryland passed away on April 11, 2022 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD. Born on May 29, 1924 in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of the late Ernest James Read and Florence Albertine Gude Read. She was preceded in death by her siblings Ernest J. Read Jr., Charles A. Read, F. Ethel White, Robert C. Read, and John Elton Read. She is survived by her sister Jacquelyn Read Zeitinger of St. Louis, MO, as well as 13 nieces and nephews, and multiple grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Miss Read graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She taught in the Washington D.C. Public School System for over 30 years before retiring in 1978. Miss Read was a long-time resident of Charles County. She attended Christ Church Durham Parish and before that, St. John’s Broad Creek Church. Miss Read was active in both civic and church organizations, including the women’s branch of the Anacostia Lion’s Club and the Altar Guild at Christ Church Durham Parish. In her personal life, Jeanne was a competitive golfer and bowler. She was an avid gardener, and during the Truman Administration she frequently provided flowers for dinner parties at the White House. More recently, she was a member of the Charles County Garden Club. In addition to gardening, Jeanne found great joy in watching the wildlife that regularly visited her feeders, including a variety of birds, hummingbirds, squirrels and deer. She became quite knowledgeable over the years about her animal visitors and was able to identify all of them. A Memorial and Eucharist service will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 11am at Christ Church Durham Parish, 8700 Ironsides Road, Nanjemoy, Maryland 20662. A reception will follow at Nanjemoy Community Center, 4375 Port Tobacco Road, Nanjemoy, Maryland 20662. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church Durham Parish, 8700 Ironsides Road, Nanjemoy, Maryland 20662.
