Hester Margaret “Billie” Mangum, 94, of College Park, Maryland passed away on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 21, 1928, in Cheltenham, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Boswell and Mamie Virginia (Rawlings) Boswell. They lovingly nicknamed her Billie as a child because of her free spirit. Billie worked several jobs throughout her life. Her first job was at a 5&10. She left the family farm to live in Washington, DC and worked for the Federal Treasury, as a bookkeeper. Next, she worked at Suburban Trust of Maryland in Seat Pleasant and Hyattsville, MD. Finally, she was employed with M Loeb Wholesale Grocery Supplies for the Accounting Department in Landover, MD. From the late 1970’s she worked by dedicating her time to her family, household and the community. Billie’s home was always open to all and you could count on good food, good company and lots of laughs. Billie enjoyed painting, crafting, canning, gardening, music and dancing. She was very involved with her senior center and traveled with their dance troupe and she was also involved with her Jaycee’s. Billie often entered her baked goods, her crafts and her vegetables into the La Plata County Fair and won many a Blue Ribbon. She organized bingo for her group and loved the game too. She was a woman of faith who spread love and joy to all she met. Billie believed in the power of prayer. She enjoyed a good joke, gatherings and always made time for ice cream. In addition to her parents and siblings, she is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Raymond Mangum Billie is survived by her children and their spouses; Sharon and Joseph Guern, Kenneth and Margaret Mangum and Wanda and Gary Pate, Sr. Her Grandchildren and their spouses: Shelley and Frank Parisi, Sr., Kimberly and Gary McCleary, Kristine Mangum, James and Sharon Schweining, Laurie and Thomas McLane, Gary Pate, Jr., Billy and Christy Mangum, RJ Pate, along with 14 Great-Grandchildren, Two Great-Great Grandchildren, A Sister-In-Law and Numerous Nieces and Nephews A Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Raymond Funeral Service, P.A., 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 St. Mary’s Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646 Interment to follow at Cheltenham Veteran’s Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, stjude.org
