Helene J "Sue" Whittington

Helene J. “Sue” Whittington, 88, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 7, 2022 surrounded by members of her loving family, and in the thoughts of those who could not be with her. She was born August 18, 1934 in Gambrills, Maryland, the youngest of seven children. Sue was devoted to her faith and as she would proudly recount, was the second baby to be baptized at Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, Maryland. During the years she lived in La Plata from 1968 to 1978, she was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish. She was a member of the Ladies Sodality as well as The Catholic Daughters of America, Court Neale. After moving to Dunkirk, Maryland, she became a founding member of Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish as they grew from meeting in a school for worship, to building their beautiful new church and school. She devoted her life to Eucharistic Adoration as well as her many daily rosaries as a member of Jesus the Good Shepherd and St. John Vianney in Prince Frederick. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining and was truly talented at these both. Holidays were especially celebrated as her family all gathered together and enjoyed one another. No one ever left Sue’s house hungry, and her children and grandchildren fondly recall the many delicious meals she served, as well as the joyous times they all shared in her home. She will be missed by many. Sue was preceded in death by her first husband Kenneth B. King Sr., and her second husband C. Raymond Whittington Jr.; as well as her parents, John and Philomena Sommer; her six siblings, Fred Sommer, Herman Sommer, Henry Sommer, Mary Elliott, Pauline Slater, and Herbert Sommer; and her great grandson Harvey Alan Burgess. She is survived by her children Helene Simpson (Edward), Kathleen Burgess (David), Kenneth B. King Jr., Beth Crawford, and Amy Clark (Harry); grandchildren Benjamin Simpson, Julianne Simpson, Bradley Burgess (Karen), Daniel Burgess (Marie), Rachael Triplett (Paul), Jeffrey Lloyd, and Kyle Lloyd (Cali); great grandchildren Cameron Friel, Sophia Burgess, Hudson Burgess, Henry Burgess, PJ Triplett, and Maddie Triplett. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 from 9AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial to be offered at 10AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 St. Mary’s Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646. Interment to follow at Southern Memorial Gardens in Dunkirk, MD.
