Helena Rebecca Jones

March 31, 1945 - January 9, 2021

Helena Rebecca Jones was born on March 31, 1945 to Alfred Bradley and Gladys Bradley Jones in Philadelphia, PA, and entered into eternal peace on January 9, 2021 in La Plata, MD. Helena received her education through the Philadelphia public school system, attending West Philadelphia High. From a very young age, Helena developed a strong will and persistence towards fighting for the matters she believed in and supported. This would later allow her to blossom into an advocate for her family and community. She worked closely alongside local government leaders, and became a strong activist for causes within the civil rights movement. Through peaceful protests and activism, she helped to effect change in policies and promote the development of programs that would be beneficial to her community, such as providing breakfasts within the school system for students. When Helena wasn’t on the battlefield for justice and equality, she could most likely be found stirring up a delicious meal in the kitchen or spending time with her children. Helena enjoyed her family and loved to laugh, but it was never a laughing matter with Helena if you bothered her children, her mother, her siblings, or anyone else dear to her. Helena was extremely protective of her family. She was not known to coward, but instead, she stood her ground fearlessly and spoke her opinion unapologetically. She loved and adored her family, and shared a very special bond with her sisters. Helena was preceded in death by her beloved father, Alfred, her loving step-father, George Jones, and sister, Charlotte Dennis. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 58 years, Walter Martin Jones; children, Michelle Alston, Kim Whitaker (Hugh), Christy Johnson (Thomas), Walter Jones, and Eric Jones (Lenore); mother, Gladys Jones; siblings, Ronald Hopkins, Dr. Carole North (Richard), Thelma Bradley, Georgianna Calhum (Solomon), Alfred Bradley, Jr (Jean); Rev. Dr. Karen Hill (Ross) and George Jones (Ophelia); 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
