HELEN RUTH WRIGHT HELMER On March 7, 2022, Helen Ruth Wright Helmer passed away at age 90 at her home of 49 years in Port Tobacco, Maryland. Helen, preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Reese Porter Helmer, Jr., leaves behind her three daughters, Mary Helen (John) Burris, Catherine (Richard) Guimond, and Angela (Dave) Russell, as well as her grandson, Jason Davis, and great granddaughter, Sydnee Davis. Born and raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and attending Mississippi Southern College, Helen’s greatest desire was to get married and have children. Her family was her greatest love and accomplishment. While she was a devoted, loving and enthusiastic homemaker, she was also a magazine cover model, chess champion, award-winning Siamese cat breeder, licensed amateur ham radio operator, and Southern cooking extraordinaire. She was very involved with her grandson’s achievement of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Helen loved animals her whole life and she, along with her husband Reese, rescued and adopted many different animals throughout her life. Helen was an extraordinary wife and mother and cared deeply for her family. She had a joy for life and an indomitable spirit that served her well, especially in her later years as she battled lymphoma. While her family greatly grieves her loss, they take comfort knowing that Helen and Reese are together once again. A private family service will be held April 7, 2022 at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
