Dennis Patrick Phelps, 70, of Pomfret, Maryland, passed away on February 23, 2022. Born on September 11, 1951 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Evalyn Herrity Phelps and the late James Francis Phelps Sr. He was preceded in death by his father and wife, Mary Frances Shlagel. Along with his mother Evalyn, Dennis leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife Yong; his siblings Buddy (Paula), Pat (Denise), Mary Claire (Tony), Mickey (Lowry), Chris (Lynn), and Tim (Veronica); his dearly loved daughters, Erin Graham (Eric) of Bellingham, WA and Katie Comella (Jason) of South Windsor, CT; his grandchildren Sean, Colleen, Larah, and Michael Graham, and Madelyn Comella; great granddaughter Penelope Graham; his stepsons Pete, Philip, and Dennis Neforos; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Dennis was born blessed with the gifts of brains and motivation. Even in childhood, he understood that achieving success in any venue required a person to out-hustle the competition. As a toddler, he overcame the debilitating paralysis of polio. As a youth he played competitive sports and joined the BSA and achieved the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. For Dennis, life was about participation and competition. He loved it and always strived to be a winner. This spirit of achievement can be traced through both his impressive employment career and in his volunteer work with many political action committees in support of the democratic party. An electrician by trade, he worked for the US Government Printing Office. He was a 47-year IBEW member serving in many capacities- Shop Steward, Executive Board Member, President/Business Manager, International Representative and Director of the Government Employees Department at the International Office. Dennis attended Archbishop Neale School and La Plata High School and Saint Leo University, Florida In his spare time, Dennis enjoyed playing golf, darts, pool and fishing with family and friends. He was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge #1709 in White Plains, MD. Dennis liked sports and games, but the part he liked most was the camaraderie that came from getting together to participate in life. Rest in peace brother Dennis. We’ll all hang out together again - Just a little further down the road.
