Christopher Jon Iekel Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Christopher Jon Iekel, 86, of Bryans Road, Maryland, passed on to the next life on June 11, 2022. He was born to Helen Frances Iekel (Corrigan) and William J. Iekel on March 9, 1936 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After growing up in Melvindale, Michigan and the beloved family farm in Springville, New York, he earned a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Marquette University. He spent his professional career as a civil servant – with the Railroad Retirement Board, the IRS, and then through 34 years as a civilian in personnel management for the Navy. Chris set a standard for service, having been a member of the Bryans Road Volunteer Fire Department for more than half a century. During that time, he served as a firefighter and as part of the rescue squad, and held many offices. He also actively lived his faith. As a longtime parishioner at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, he was a reader and instructor for people converting to Catholicism, and for 30 years brought Communion to nursing home residents. Chris also was a passionate devotee of the Civil War; he belonged to the Chicago Civil War Roundtable and the Sons of Union Veterans (a great grandfather was a doctor for the Union Army) and transformed that interest into a gift by doing research into involvement in the Civil War by Charles Countians. Chris had a great love of books and reading, and turned that into a gift as well, serving for many years as an officer in the Southern Maryland Library Association. Chris is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Carol Ann (Schaber), son John (Lisa) of Falls Church, Virginia, and granddaughters Emily (Jeremy Quicke) of Baltimore, Maryland and Grace (Ben Scanlon) of Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as brothers Jerome (Penny) of Sheridan, Wyoming and Frederick (Jackie) of Rochester, New York. He was predeceased by his brother Robert. Donations in memoriam can be made to the Bryans Road Volunteer Fire Department.
