Roy William Gibson Sr.

Roy William Gibson, Sr., 71 years old, passed away suddenly at home on Monday, March 9, 2015. Roy was born in Washington, DC, on July 26, 1943 to Roy Mathews Gibson and Ellen Louise Balderson Gibson. He grew up in Washington, DC, until the family relocated to Maryland, first to Palmer Park, where he attended Bladensburg Jr. and Sr. High Schools, and then to Camp Springs, where Roy finished his education at Surrattsville High School in Clinton. He was a plumber by trade working for James Horan Plumbing Co. in Edgewater, MD. Roy led a very active life, enjoying hobbies like water skiing, building and racing cars, skeet shooting and his favorite pastime of golf. Until 2011, he was an active member of the White Plains Senior Golf League and continued to play in golf tournaments throughout Maryland with his brother-in-law, Mike Emery, Sr. Because of his severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, he semi-retired from golf and began collecting knives of all kinds. He also enjoyed playing computer games and editing home movies. Roy was a die-hard Redskins fan for over 50 years. He religiously followed the NASCAR circuit, along with his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale, Jr. Roy met Debbie in 1969 and continued their relationship into marriage until the time of his death. He leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, Debbie Gibson of Waldorf, MD; his daughters, Terry DeLong of Daytona Beach, FL, Ellen Gibson of Daytona Beach, FL, Lisa Gibson-Hillyer of Waldorf, MD and Robin LaRue Gibson of Waldorf, MD and their son, Roy Gibson, Jr. and his wife, Amanda of Waldorf, MD; as well as grandsons, Josh, Leonard and Shawn DeLong of Alabama, Shane and James Hillyer of Waldorf, MD and a great-grandson in Montgomery, AL; his sister-in-law, Juanita Widmer and her family of Tillamook, OR; his brother-in-law, Michael Emery, Sr. and his family of Owings, MD; his brother, Alan “Butch” Gibson and family of Stevensville, MD, David Gibson and Clay Powers of Edgewater, FL; his sister, Donna Lombardo and family in Huntingtown, MD. He also leaves behind a host of friends, neighbors, members of “The Crew” and their families and countless others who loved him and are missing him terribly. In Lieu of Flowers, an account for benefit of Robin L. Gibson has been established at PNC Bank (this may be done at any PNC Bank, Account #53-0954-0403) or contributions can be given at the Services. Visitation on Thursday, March 12, from 2PM to 4PM and from 6PM to 8PM with Funeral Service to begin at 7PM at the Raymond Funeral Service, P.A., 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646. Interment will take place on Friday, March 13, 2015 at 10AM at St. Joseph's Church Cemetery 4590 St Joseph Way Pomfret, MD 20675.
