Roberta Jeanne Wearmouth

Roberta Jeanne Wearmouth, October 11, 1926 – March 9, 2025 Roberta Jeanne Wearmouth of Port Tobacco, Maryland peacefully passed away Sunday evening March 9, 2025, at the age of 98. She was born on October 11, 1926, in Battle Creek, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Mildred Clark, brother Robert Clark, her loving husband of nearly 70 years John Milton Wearmouth, and daughter-in-law Beth McGee. She is survived by her sisters Helen Hajek and Virginia Balke; daughter Ann Wearmouth; son Peter, wife Teresa (Hill); grandson Justin, wife Rachel, and great granddaughter Rylee Jeanne.; granddaughter Abigail Nichols, husband Larry, and great grandchildren Christopher, Connor and Olivia; and granddaughter Paige, partner Jon Penepent. Roberta lived a long and fulfilling life. After graduating a year early from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1943 she worked at Percy Jones Hospital in the amputee ward. She moved to East Lansing, Michigan and studied at Michigan State University in 1945. On August 18, 1946, she married John Wearmouth. In 1949, they moved to Arlington, Virginia and Roberta worked as a Management Analyst for the Internal Revenue Service. Roberta and John moved to Port Tobacco, Maryland in 1958 as Charles County celebrated its tercentenary. The history of the county fascinated them, and they researched and wrote about it for many years. Roberta compiled six volumes including “Abstracts From The Port Tobacco Times And Charles County Advertiser,” which is still used today by many to research genealogy and other local history. She co-authored and co-edited several other local history books with her husband. She was an active resident of Charles County and was a former President of the Charles County Cancer Society, President of the GFWC Charles County Woman’s Club, Inc., appointed by Governor Marvin Mandel to Charles County Human Relations Commission, and co-founded the Patchworkers Quilting Club. Roberta was very active in the Children’s Aid Society, the first woman to serve on the vestry at the La Plata Methodist Church, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, sat on the board of the Citizens for a Better Charles County, and co-chaired the county’s committee to develop a recycling strategy. With her husband, she owned and operated Stones Throw Antiques for over 30 years. With all that and more, Roberta (Mom) was never too busy to put her family first! Her love will live in us forever.
