Robert "Bob" Edwards

Robert (Bob) Edwards, aged 92, passed away on May 20, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 1, 1931 in Stanley, Virginia. His family moved from Stanley, Virginia to Camp Springs, Maryland then to Washington, DC. He graduated from Surrattsville High School and was a soccer, football and baseball player for his high school. Playing baseball was his passion. He was a great pitcher and he was scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates to join their team as a pitcher-twice. Bob declined this great opportunity to play for Pittsburgh as his life-long dream was to be a soldier and defend his beloved country. Bob joined the U.S. Marine Corp in June 1950. He moved up in rank to Staff Sgt. He was a Korean War Veteran and bestowed upon him the title of Atomic Veteran for his service during the Atomic Bomb Testing in the 1950’s at Frenchman’s Flat at the 1st air dropped atomic test on American soil. He was proud to serve and protect his country and flew his American Flag proudly every day. On June 7, 1952 Bob married his sweetheart, Anna Marie Lunceford. They were married for 68 years. Together they raised three children. Bob was a member of the American Legion Post 259 in Clinton Maryland and the Clinton Lion’s Club. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and cherished friends. He also was the owner of his construction company, then retired and enjoyed a new venture of being a waterman on the Patuxent River. He enjoyed crabbing, gardening beautiful flowers, cooking for everyone, watching baseball and football, refurbishing furniture, history buff of American, European and U.S. War novels. He had so many Korean war stories that he loved sharing on social media and with family and friends. He is survived by his three children: Denice Schroeder (Doug), Robin T. Carrico (Rudy), Glenn C. Edwards (Meghan). He was the beloved grandfather of six Chris Schroeder (Trier), Jessica Fynn (Dominic), Brittany Carrico, Brooke Carrico, Rudy Carrico III, Glenn C. Edwards, Jr and great grandson: Weston R. Schroeder.He was preceded in his death by his wife Anna Marie Lunceford Edwards, by his father Charles Marvin Edwards, Mother Reda Mae Gordon, step father Willie E. Gordon, and sister Dorothy L. Green. A gathering for family and friends will be held on Friday June 7, 2024 from 10:30AM to 12PM (Noon) at Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Ave La Plata, MD 20646. A service will be held at 12PM (Noon) at Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Ave La Plata, MD 20646. Inurnment will follow at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
