Mabel Louise Bowie

Mabel Louise Bowie a/k/a “Miss Daisy”, age 82 of Welcome, Maryland, died peacefully at her home on November 7, 2020. Born October 31, 1938 in La Plata, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Hockett and the late Susie Hockett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Benjamin F. Bowie after many years of marriage; her brother, Dale Hockett; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Price. She is survived by her beloved son, Steven “Steve” Craig Bowie; her granddaughter, Katherine McGarvey (Timothy); her great-grandchildren, Riley and Colin McGarvey of Naples, Florida; her daily companion, Benji, her much loved Schnauzer; her brother, Daniel “Danny” Hockett; her sisters, Ruth Hockett Fennell (Johnny) and Joyce Hockett; her sisters-in-law, Judy Bowie Tippett, Olive Perry, Sally Davis (NC), Carol Bowie; and her brother-in-law, Alton Bowie; and her life-long friend, Barbara Dyson. She has many nieces and nephews living throughout Southern Maryland/Charles County and North Carolina. Although not her son, John Short (Big John) was an extremely cherished and loyal employee for over 50 years and she considered him her “other son.” She is also survived by her many adopted children including Cindy Hampton (Wade), the “girl she never had” and who started working for Mabel when she was 13. Mabel took her under her wing throughout her teenage years and still continued through her life. Also important are Laurie and Jim Kick and her very special grandchildren, Preston Kick, M.D., Heather, and Rachel. They all considered her their mother and/or grandmother after meeting them on their many camping trips at the Bowie family-owned Goose Bay Marina. Mabel attended their weddings as the honorary grandmother and was escorted down the aisle in that role. Once you met Mabel, you were her friend for life. It was during their marriage that Ben and his father co-founded Goose Bay Marina along the edge of the Bowie farmland on Goose Bay Lane. Being a co-owner of the Marina, Mabel worked alongside the employees n the boatyard and was always present at the boat store. Mabel was known as a very shrewd businesswoman and was extremely successful at single-handedly running Goose Bay on her own until she retired in 1997. Mabel lived in Florida for a short time but returned to her much-loved Charles County and the Bowie farm. She was an avid animal lover and kept all the strays that Steve very often brought home when he was a child – either domestic or wild – she loved all God’s gifts. It was Mabel’s wish for donations to be made to Melwood Farm in Ironsides, Maryland where they have been graciously taking care of her beloved donkey, Biscuit, who now entertains the many special needs individuals that go there daily. The family would like to thank the many caregivers, nurses, and doctors that attended to Mabel in the last two years, especially Dr. Wathen, her friend. A special thank you to Ann Burey, Sue Estevez, and Teresa Hall. A date for a Celebration of Life gathering will be announced later.
