Lawrence Eugene Shontere Jr

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our loved one, Gene Shontere, at his home on July 21, 2025 Lawrence Eugene Shontere Jr was born on Friday, February 13, 1959 in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Known to his friends and family as Gene, he was born into a big Catholic family, where he grew up going to church, playing little league, and spent lots and lots of time on the water in Southern Maryland. Much to everyone’s dismay, Gene was an intelligent student who preferred to spend his time on the field instead of in the classroom. Many will remember Gene as a multi-sport star in football, basketball, baseball and track. Into his adulthood, he also waterskied, hunted, fished, golfed, played tennis, ping pong, was an excellent pool player, and an even better drinker. One would be hard pressed to find something Gene wasn’t good at. However, those that knew Gene also knew his love for the outdoors, sports, and motorcycles was only surpassed by how much he adored his only daughter, Alexis. Gene ultimately learned the family furniture trade and was professionally successful through his company, Shontere Restoration. He made an impact on the furniture restoration community and will be greatly missed by his employees and his clients. What Gene did best, however, was people. He had the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel like they had known him forever. He was also well regarded for his quiet generosity, always ready to give his time, energy, or money to help someone when they needed it the most. Gene was the guy you could call at 2 PM to help you move a couch, or 2 AM when your car ran out of gas on the side of the road. He is preceded in death by his sister Dawn Boudreaux, and survived by his parents (Lawrence Eugene Shontere, Sr and Barbara Louise (Kyte) Shontere), his brothers (Vince and Kenny), his sisters (Lee Anne and Michelle), all his nieces and nephews he loved like his own children, his beloved daughter, Alexis, and her fiancé, Jon Exline. A celebration of life will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please take time to hug your loved ones, spend some time outside, and have a shot of Woodford’s Reserve.
