Jennie Anna Sherman

Jennie Anna Sherman, age 91 of La Plata, Maryland died December 12, 2016 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. Jennie was the daughter of Salvatore Ciccarello and Gaitana DiGiovanni Ciccarello. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Walter “Dick” Sherman and her daughter, Jeannie (Cia) Sherman Christison. She is survived by her son, Robert S. Sherman (Carolyn); her daughter, Kathleen A. Willis; her sisters, Lou Torrez (Rudy) and Tina Scanio (Vincenzo); her grandchildren, David P. Willis and Jodi K. Koontz; and her great-grand Children, Peyton Koontz and Leland Koontz. She is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and grand nephews and nieces. Born and raised in Ybor City, Florida, Jennie attended West Hillsborough High School. Her parents were part of Ybor’s historic cigar industry. She met Dick, an airman with the United States Army Air Crop while she worked at Drew Field. They married in 1944. Two years later they moved to Washington, D.C., eventually settling in Oxon Hill, MD where they raised their son and daughters. Over the years Jennie enjoyed volunteering with the OHVFD Ladies Aux and Oxon Hill Majorettes; while also being a devout member of St Columba Catholic Church. After becoming widowed, Jennie returned to Tampa, Florida re-establishing her life with family and new friends. She joined the Knights of Columbus Columbiaettes, Xi Delta Delta Sorority, the Sons of Italy and volunteered in the community. Through church and friends Jennie met and enjoyed the company of her sweetheart the late Harry Atteberry. Together Jennie and Harry volunteered, traveled, socialized and truly lived life. In 2010 Jennie returned to Maryland finally settling at The Maples Senior Living Apartments. She genuinely cherished her numerous friends there and faithfully attended weekly rosary. She was ever present at many special activities. Jennie enjoyed hobbies such as reading, crocheting quilting and dancing. While she will be dearly missed she will forever be remembered for her excellent memory, great cooking, sassy personality and quick wit. Her most endearing traits were being a loving mother, Nana, BG, Aunt and Friend. Friends received on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 from 5-8PM with Catholic Wake Service at 7PM at Raymond Funeral Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 11AM at St. Columba Catholic Church in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Interment to follow at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Maryland at 1PM.
