Elizabeth Louise Garner

Elizabeth L. Garner, age 95, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2020. She was born on March 1, 1925, in Philadelphia, PA to the late James A. and Rosalie D. Stone Fennell. Her family moved to La Plata, Maryland, in 1935 at age 10. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband George L. Garner. Elizabeth (Betty) worked for the old C&P Telephone Company as a Business Representative. She retired after 24 years of service. Once she retired from the C&P Telephone Co, she decided to run for the Charles County Judge of the Orphans Court. With the support of her brother-in-law Buddy Garner, retired Sherriff of Charles County, she won the election on the first try. Here fondest memories of working on the Judge of the Orphans Court is the great teamwork and new friendships developed over the years. She cared deeply for the citizens that appeared before the court. Her first few months in office were filled with apprehension, but Henry Middleton and Gertrude Wright, Clerk of Wills took her under their wings, and she was on her way. They became lifelong friends. Buddy Garner served as her treasurer until she retired in 2009. She was 84 years old. Betty deeply loved her family. Some of her fondest memories were the family gatherings with Garner/Fennell clan. She was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church in La Plata. A member of the National College of Probate Judges, served many years as the treasurer of the Dr. Samuel Mudd Historical Society, member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Pioneer Club, Society of Restoration of Mt. Carmel, the 2&1 Club Senior Center in La Plata where she volunteered many years in the office. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her sister Lillian Bobby Garner (Buddy), brothers James Fennell and William Fennell (Barbara). Brother-in-Laws Heber Garner (Anne) and Harold Brent Garner (Shirley). She is survived by her sister Maude Fennell Holt (Clint), and brother John F. Fennell (Ruth). Betty is survived by her three daughters Sandra E. Garner Kennedy (William), F. Lee Garner Tolbert (Ellis) and Betty Lou Garner Crumrine (George). She has eight grandchildren Christine F. Kennedy, Katherine Kennedy Halgren (Jason/Theo), Juliana Kennedy, Cindy L. Owens (Lance), Cheryl Quade Woody (Eric), Jennifer Logan Norment (Bobby), Serena Crumrine Fernandez (Rick) and Isaac Crumrine and three great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are as follows: Brent Garner, Francis (Butch) Garner, Jamie Fennell, Christopher Quade, Robert (Bobby) Norment and Isaac Crumrine.
