Dawn-Moree Dugan

Dawn-Moree Dugan, 79 of Welcome, Maryland, passed away on February 6, 2024. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born to James M. Jones and Gail M. (Cross) Jones on October 9, 1944. She was a very loving and patriotic woman who accepted everyone she knew as family. To know her was to love her. To be known by her was to be loved by her. Her love was unconditional and constant, as she let everyone know it. She married John J Dugan Jr. (Jerry), and together they raised four children. Dawn-Moree was an accomplished interior designer and seamstress, running her own business called Dugan Workroom for 50 years. In addition to fabricating world class custom draperies, many people brought her items for alterations and enjoyed chatting with her as she worked her magic on their gowns, wedding dresses, costumes, and other clothing in her sewing “shop” while listening to music, or watching CBS soap-operas. She was physically strong and prided herself on her tool collection and woodworking skills. She reminded her friends of Rosie the Riveter with her “We Can Do It!” attitude, and she was capable of figuring out how to make or fix anything. She loved being outdoors, camping and traveling in their RV. She enjoyed ancestry research, gardening, and all things nature but especially frogs and hummingbirds. She and Jerry had fun driving their antique cars and going on outings with Southern Maryland Antique Auto Club over the years, and she continued to drive her (stick-shift) 1954 Ford until recently. To quote her directly, she loved “antique cars, gardening, doll houses, gardening, helping others, gardening, sewing and gardening.” She believed in seizing all of the joy in life which often meant eating dessert before dinner, having her favorite McDonald’s caramel frappe, and keeping a ready supply of M&Ms to be enjoyed at all times. When she was about 60 years old, she answered a flyer that came in the mail soliciting drivers for Ironsides Volunteer Rescue Squad (IVRS). After joining with a simple goal of keeping herself busy in retirement doing something helpful, she decided to increase her commitment and complete the extensive training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). She ran thousands of calls with IVRS and saved countless lives. During her time with the rescue squad, she achieved the rank of Captain and served in officer positions such as Assistant Chief and Secretary. She also received multiple awards such as Top Runner several times over the years. Serving her community was hugely important to her, and she could often be found volunteering her time for local organizations, events and charities such as the Charles County Literacy Council, working local elections, Big Hair Ball for Lifestyles of Maryland, and BRIDGE Church Indian Head where she was an active member. She had a lot of fun in various roles over the years, and one of her favorite side jobs was working for the All-American Harley Davidson dealership in Hughesville, Md, serving and preparing food for folks visiting the dealership on Saturdays. She enjoyed greeting and meeting everyone and dancing around to her famous music playlist. Dawn-Moree definitely had an adventurous side and even did a cross-country trek to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in North Dakota with friends in her RV. No adventure was too big or small for her. She rejoins her husband and parents in heaven, as well as her beloved Mammy, Johnnie Bell Bratten. She is survived by her sister Karen Lewis (George); her children: Jamie Bratten (Cindy), Wendy Stommel (Chris), Gina Nairn (George), and Johnny Dugan (Ginger); Grandchildren: Brian Ellis, Amberlyn Granger, Corbin Blake, Cameron Stommel, Amanda Bailey, Tony Gray, Jeremiah Nairn, Mikayla Nairn, Jonah Dugan and Walker Dugan, and 11 great grandchildren, along with many other extended family and loving friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on March 23 at noon at Ironsides Volunteer Rescue Squad.
