Barbara Ann Smith

Barbara Ann Smith, 79, formerly of Erie, PA, passed away Oct. 18 at her home in Waldorf, MD, surrounded by family and dear friends. Born on March 24, 1946, in Albion, PA, she graduated from Northwestern High School in Albion in 1964 and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She was an English teacher for more than 35 years, starting at Northwestern Junior High in Albion. She and her husband moved to Maryland in 1987, where she taught at Henry Lackey High School in Indian Head, MD, and as an adjunct English instructor at the College of Southern Maryland in LaPlata, MD after her retirement. She was a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority. Barbara was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed sewing, reading, and crossword puzzles. She was a fan of the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cleveland Guardians. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Thomas G. Smith; her parents, James and Veronica (Oravetz) Barney; her in-laws, John P. and Marie Smith; brother- and sister-in-law John R. (Jack) and Uta Smith, and brother-in-law Kenneth C. Smith. Survivors include brother-in-law William F. Smith (Debbie), sister-in-law Patty Wenzel; nieces Julia (Marc), Michelle (Christopher), Allison (Mourad), Caitlyn (Ian), and Brooke (David); nephews, Michael (Lisa) and Mark (Tricia); great-nieces Sophie, Emily, Calliope, Lorelai, Mackenzie, and Morgan; great-nephews Eric, Calvin, Seamus, Christopher (Carly), and dear friends, Linda, Peggy and her dogs Maggie, Chloe and Sunny, Ed, Kathy, Tom, Stan, and Mitzi. Special thanks are extended to the aides who provided comfort and care to Aunt Barb. Services will be on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (201 St. Mary’s Avenue, LaPlata, MD 20646). Visitation will be at the church at 9:00 AM. Mass will be at 10:00 AM followed by burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
