Charlotte Ann Benfield

Charlotte Ann Benfield (née Taylor) of La Plata, MD, died peacefully in her home with her son at the age of 69 on March 11, 2023 after a two-year battle with cancer. Visitation will take place at 11 a.m., followed by service and burial beginning at 12 p.m., on Friday, March 24, 2023 at New Life Church in La Plata, MD. A Celebration of Life will then take place beginning at 3 p.m. at the Riverview Banquet Room at Wicomico Shores Golf Course in Mechanicsville, MD. Arrangements are by Raymond Funeral Service. Charlotte was born in Princeton, West Virginia to Hurley Matthew Taylor and Inez Siner Taylor on February 10, 1954. She attended school in Baltimore City before moving overseas to Germany, and then settling in Charles County, MD and King George, VA for the remainder of her life. She married the late Clay Allen Benfield in Leonardtown, MD on February 14, 1978 and they shared two sons, Thomas and Jason. She was a small business owner of Fast Track Tag & Title LLC, a company she co-founded with her husband Clay and son Jason in 2006. She had been a member of several local churches, a local band called Fly By Nite in the late 1980s, and enjoyed spending her free time shopping or accompanying her husband at the casino. Above all else, Charlotte was at her happiest when surrounded by her large family and hosted many gatherings at her home. She had the biggest, softest heart, a spitfire sense of humor, and was a shining light in countless people’s lives. Charlotte is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Clay; parents Hurley and Inez; and siblings Danny Matthew Taylor (Carol), Connie Jean Taylor Zukowski (Leo), and Barry Wayne Taylor. Charlotte is survived by her sons Thomas “Tommy” Francis Benfield and Jason Allan Benfield (Guynell Pittman); sister Aletta Jo Taylor Sleeper; grandchildren Constance “Connie” Ann Marie Haskins (Kristina), Daniel “DJ” Jacob Benfield (Ciera), Khloe Elizabeth, and Emma June; and great-grandchild Daniel “Danny” Jacob Benfield, Jr.; Aunt Pat Garner; Sisters-in-Law Elsie Benfield and Jackie Benfield; lifelong best friend Maggie Chialastri; and countless more loved ones including nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. She cheerfully served in the role of “MawMaw” to relatives and friends alike, and will be deeply missed by all who cherished her. Pallbearers will be her grandson DJ; nephews Stanley Edwards and Roger Benfield, Jr.; and great-nephews Matthew McCan, Jesse Destacy, and Tommy Farrell. The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Irina Veytsman and her care team at Washington Hospital Center.
